Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
by Jonathan Gramling
The continent of Africa is the personification of diversity with 55 countries, 3,000 ethnic groups speaking over 2,000 distinct languages and who practice Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism and traditional African religions. Much of this diversity is found in Madison’s African community with countries represented from East to West and North to South.
But especially on one day of the year, they are united together as Africans and celebrate Africa’s contributions with the Madison community at large. Africa Fest brings all of together in the spirit of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
The 2024 Africa Fest — hosted by the African Association of Madison — kicked off with Strides for Africa at McPike Park on August 17th, a walk/race fundraiser to support community projects in Africa. And then from noon until 10 p.m., there was music, dancing and dining on African Diasporic foods. Information tables and arts, crafts and clothing booths lined the fair grounds. And one of the big highlights is the African Women’s Association tent that featured a diversity of clothing and artifacts while also celebrating the equity and inclusion of women leaders arising on the continent and the United States.
Africa Fest is always a fulfilling day, the one day where everyone who enters the festival grounds is African for the day, always appreciating the bonds of our humanity.
