REFLECTIONS/Jonathan Gramling

Adolph Trump

First of all, before I start  my column, I want to thank all of the marvelous people from the 20 community voices who wrote essays on Democracy and Civil Rights or other civil rights issues or even personal reflections on what Dr. King means to them. I learned so much from reading their essays and I hope their writings serve as a primer for a reflective King Holiday weekend for our readership. I hope Dr. King would be proud. I know I am.

My son teases me that I am obsessed with Donald Trump. As a political scientist, I am wary of the things that Trump talks about and what he would like to do. He is a leader without conscience and a complete disregard for the people around him, people he would discard if it suited his purposes.

My dad was wounded during World War II when a kamikaze plowed into the aircraft hanger he had just left on the USS Sangmon during the Battle of Okinawa. His first cousin Anch was killed on the beaches of Italy during the war. They paid a high price for the defense of Democracy against ruthless dictators like Adolph Hitler. Donald Trump would have considered them fools for volunteering and then getting wounded or killed during the war. They made the sacrifice to defend Democracy that Donald Trump would like to destroy for his own narcissistic purposes.

When you look into Trump’s past, you find that his mother was a Scottish immigrant — the good kind in Trump’s world view — and his father was a second generation German American. The origins of the name Donald are very informative. According to and backed up by a couple of other sites, this is the origin of Donald, probably given to him by his Scottish mother.

“English form of the Scottish name Domhnall which means "ruler of the world", from the Gaelic dumno, meaning "world" and val, meaning "rule".”

I wonder if Donald Trump grew up with this mentality that he was destined to rule the world. Did his mother whisper that in his ear as a child as his father raised him coldly to be a narcissist without compassion?

It was reported by his then wife Ivana way back in 1990 that Trump kept a copy of Hitler’s ‘My New Order’ in his nightstand. It is a collection of Hitler’s speeches, but Trump denied ever reading Hitler’s speeches, pretty much like he denies everything he is accused of doing. He has been the world’s most persecuted person since birth. I think Trump has always felt persecuted. When he lost the 2020 election, he merely changed the context of his ongoing feeling of self-pity and persecution. What did his father do to him as a child?

When I was looking at a piece from the National World War II Museum on how Adolph Hitler rose to power, I could see some of Donald Trump’s rise in the narrative, which was written before Trump entered politics — it was founded in 2000 — so this isn’t part of the Deep State of the U.S. Government. The quotes from the museum are followed by my commentary.

“Hitler could not have risen to power or committed such atrocities on his own. He had the active support of the powerful German officer class and of millions of everyday citizens who voted for the National Socialist German Workers’ (Nazi) Party and hailed him as a national savior in gigantic stadium rallies.” Trump loves to hold large rallies. How many times have I read that Trump is a savior, that Evangelical Christians look at him as savior even though he has been divorced several times and has ajudicated as having sexually assaulted someone? Don’t some view Trump as the savior of White America? Some have even equated him to the Second Coming.

“Upon achieving power, Hitler smashed the nation’s democratic institutions.” It wasn’t that long ago that Trump said that he would ignore the US Constitution. The following is a quote of Trrump from Truth Central:

“Do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.”

“Hitler was the ideologue as well as the chief organizer of the Nazi Party. By 1921, the party had a newspaper, an official flag, and a private army—the Sturmabteilung SA (storm troopers)—made up largely of unemployed and disenchanted WWI veterans.”

When I look at the disinformation and “alternative facts” from Fox News and other right-wing outlets that have supported Trump since 2016, Trump didn’t need his own news outlet. His buddy Rupert Murdoch supplied all of the propaganda that Trump needed to rise to power. When Fox News was successfully sued for publishing false news, did Donald “Ruler of the World” Trump come to his aid? As far as I can tell, Trump kept right on moving.

And who can forget the Proud Boys and other militia groups that stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 to do Trump’s bidding. Trump has his own storm troopers.

“Hitler pledged to restore prosperity, create civil order (by crushing industrial strikes and street demonstrations by communists and socialists), eliminate the influence of Jewish financiers, and make the fatherland once again a world power.”

Back in June 2023, Trump stated that he would kick the Marxists and Communists out of the U.S. if he were elected president. Are we sure Trump didn’t read Mein Kampf, written by Hitler while he was in prison? Trump always denies, but actions speak louder than words.

In Mein Kampf, Adolph Hitler talked about the pureness of the blood of the Aryan race. This is an excerpt: “It was and it is Jews who bring the Negroes into the Rhineland, always with the same secret thought and clear aim of ruining the hated white race by the necessarily resulting bastardization, throwing it down from its cultural and political height, and himself rising to be its master.

This is a quote from NBC News, which Trump would like to take on if he becomes president. “They let — I think the real number is 15, 16 million people into our country. When they do that, we got a lot of work to do. They’re poisoning the blood of our country,” Trump told the crowd at a rally in New Hampshire. “That’s what they’ve done. They poison mental institutions and prisons all over the world, not just in South America, not just to three or four countries that we think about, but all over the world. They’re coming into our country from Africa, from Asia, all over the world.”

It sure seems that Trump is echoing Hitler.

And finally, Trump denies that he wants to become a dictator. But he said the following: “"We love this guy," Trump said of Hannity. "He says, 'You're not going to be a dictator, are you?' I said: 'No, no, no, other than day one. We're closing the border, and we're drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I'm not a dictator.'”

But Donald “Ruler of the World” Trump has always been a man who can’t say no to himself. Once he got the taste of being a dictator — given his admiration of Russia’s Vladimir Putin — there would be no turning back. He would become enthralled and would not be able to relinquish the power. He would want more.

For these reasons, I now pronounce Donald “Ruler of the World” Trump Adolph Trump. It is something that he has been destined for — in his family’s eyes — his whole life. He’s not going to give it up now or ever.

Adolph Trump is what my father, a conservative Republican,  fought against in World War II. It would be disgraceful to allow him to come to power in America. Resist the autocracy!
