Luna Negra hosts Community Fiesta at Con Safos Community Theater
Cultural Exchange

By Jonathan Gramling

Luna Negra is more than just a dance troupe that calls Chicago home. It is also a troupe of cultural ambassadors who
bring their performance skills to the community in order to teach Latin and Afro-Caribbean dance skills to students of all ages.
On November 19, the day before their performance at the Overture Center for the Arts, Luna Negra hosted a Community
Fiesta at Con Safos Mexican Dinner Theater in McFarland. As the audience feasted on a dinner served up by Con Safos,
WISC-TV 3 Reporter Maria Guerrero introduced local performing groups Culture Connections and Juverntura. Culture
Connections performed two tradition Mexican dances while Juventura served up some positive rap rhymes.
And after the audience had enjoyed their feast, members of Luna Negra, led by Eduardo Vilaro, taught all who wanted
to participate some basic Latin and Afro-Caribbean dance steps. While many were hesitant at first, they soon got swinging
with the Latin beat. A fun time was served up for all.
