| Carlos is a junior at Marquette University., majoring in accounting. Adrian is a senior at Oak Creek High School. All six family members volunteer extensively in the community. They have volunteered for the Hunger Task Force, Kusciosko Community Center, St, Adalbert's Church, UMOS Mexican Independence Parade and Festival and many other community events and activities. Carmen Cepeda is the 2006 UMOS Hispanic Woman of the Year. Carmen Cepeda has held the position of Academic Advisor/Recruiter for the Roberto Hernandez at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 2000. Cepeda has served the Milwaukee community from her heart for more than 25 years. She has volunteered for Mexican Fiesta, Miss Latina Racine Scholarship event, UMOS Mexican Independence Parade and Festival, Elmbrook Hospital Drug and Alcohol Abuse Unit, Hispanic Club at International Institute, Latin American Cultural Exhibit and at a south side food pantry. Micabil Diaz-Martinez is the 2006 UMOS Hispanic Man of the Year. Diaz-Martinez is a graduate of Marquette University and Marquette University Law School. He is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, President and Board Member of the Wisconsin Hispanic Lawyers Association, Member, Wisconsin Employment Lawyers Association, Member, State Bar of Wisconsin's Board of Governors, Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee and many other prestigious associations and memberships. Since January 2005, Diaz-Martinez has served as Deputy Secretary for the State of Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD). Previously he served as an Administrator for the Equal Rights Division for DWD, Legal Director for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Wisconsin Foundation. Christina Yvette Garcia is the 2006 UMOS Hispanic Youth of the Year. Christina Garcia is a 2006 graduate of Kenosha Tremper High School, Kenosha, Wisconsin, with a 3.75 GPA. Garcia was awarded a full tuition scholarship to Carthage College in Kenosha. This scholarship is worth $100,000 over four years, She also was awarded a Wisconsin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Philip Arreola Scholarship as well a 2006 Minority Academic Achievement Recognition (MAARC) Book Scholarship. Juan Jose Lopez was awarded the 2006 Professor Roberto Sanchez Award on October 27 by Centro Hispano of Dane County. The Award was established in 2004 to recognize individuals who have demonstrated a long-standing commitment to promote the academic achievement of Latino students. Lopez worked for Centro Hispano starting in 1987 to develop youth career programs at Madison middle schools. From there he was hired by the Madison Community Foundation to develop Project Opportunity. Lopez went on to become executive director of Briarpatch, and the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County. Lopez has served on numerous community organizations, groups and boards, including being a founding member of LUChA (Latinos United for Change and Advancement), and La Sup (Latino Support Network). Lopez also served as a member of the Madison Metropolitan School District Board until 2006. Lopez is currently employed by the Wisconsin Department of Justice as a program and planning analyst. Dr. Ashok Bhargava was given a 2006 Community Service award by the Wisconsin Organization for Asian Americans at its fall potluck October 7. Bhargava is a retired member of the UW-Whitewater faculty. He currently works as a consultant. Bhargava has a long history of being involved in the Madison community. He is currently a board member of the MATC Foundation and has been a member of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold's "kitchen cabinet" since Feingold was first elected in 1992. |

| During the month of October, three organizations of color: United Migrant Opportunity Services (UMOS), Centro Hispano of Dane County, and the Wisconsin Organization for Asian Americans held award ceremonies as a part of their fall banquets and get togethers. The awardees are: The Hernandez Family: Teresa, Jesus and their four sons, Jesus, Jr., Luis, Carlos, and Adrian -- was the 2006 UMOS Hispanic Family of the Year at the UMOS award banquet in Milwaukee October 28. The family was selected because of their extraordinary accomplishments, both collectively and individually. Teresa is an Assistant vice president/community relations at Lincoln State Bank in Milwaukee. Jesus is studying HVAC and English at MATC, and is a catechist and has helped prepare children for their First Holy Communion and Conformation at St. Raphel Archangel, Prince of Peace. Jesus Jr., is a senior at Marquette University, majoring in Communication Studies and Business Management. Luis will graduate premed from Marquette University. |
