| On September 9, 2006, the Madison chapter of the Association of Indians in America (AIA) celebrated India Day as a way of showcasing Indian culture. Like in the past, the event was held at the Library Mall, by State Street. AIA volunteers arrived early on the scene, to set tables, stalls and audio equipment for the cultural program that was to be held later in the day. By 10:30 a.m., the Library Mall suddenly sprung to life as the performers and the various foodstall-owners/vendors trickled in. AIA volunteers could be seen scurrying about, tying up loose ends, leaving no detail go by unnoticed. The program commenced with a rendition of the US and the Indian National Anthems. This was followed by short performances by youngsters of all ages, capturing the beauty and elegance of classical Indian dance and also the energy and joie de vivre of popular Indian music. Passers-by gathered to take in the colorful show of dance and music and also partake of the delicious Indian food prepared at the foodstalls. The tables had displays of Indian artifacts, and also information about the various Indian organizations in Madison, their goals and their activities. Said one AIA member, "India Day began in a very small way, mainly to showcase Indian culture. This tradition has been kept going strong by the hard work of all the AIA volunteers and the enthusiasm of local performers. The Library Mall has proved to be an ideal place to hold this event as it engages a very diverse audience. Rain or shine, this India Day tradition will go on and on!" |
