On May 17, the Madison Metropolitan Links led the way in honoring the
academic achievements of African American students in the Madison
Metropolitan School District. Hundreds of youth along with their family and friends
packed the Redsten Gymnasium at Madison Area Technical College to receive
their certificates of achievement. Several outstanding students received savings
bonds for their achievements. Parents who have extensively volunteered in the
schools were also honored.
At the end of the program, the Madison Metropolitan Links, the Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority awarded outstanding graduating
high school seniors with scholarships with funds that the organizations had raised
throughout the year.
While African American students who are achieving may be sprinkled
throughout the Madison public schools, the Links ceremony shows the Madison
community that there is a strong peer group of academic achievement in the
African American community and that these students make the community proud.
