It takes singular, concerted and focused
effort to earn a degree. While there are small
rewards one receives over the course of a college
degree, the big reward — a diploma — is 2-5
years out. There are long nights spent studying in
libraries or working on papers. There are
opportunities and events that are given up
because of your commitment to your studies. And
when you walk across that stage, it is a wonderful
feeling to know that you have accomplished an
important academic milestone as you receive
your diploma.
Yet no one is alone during those academic years. It is family and friends who have also
sacrificed for you, who have nurtured you and counseled you during times of doubt. It is your
parents who have made financial sacrifices in order to see you reach for the academic
heavens. And they have placed a part of their lives on hold for you and have picked up the
slack on chores or taken care of your children. So while it is you who has attained academic
success, there are many hands holding you up as you reach for the skies.
