Sandburg Elementary School poets

Part 1 of 2
The last day of April also means the last day of National Poetry month. These
student poets at Sandburg elementary (named after the poet, Carl Sandburg)
study with Ms. Ellie Golden. The variety of their poetry indicates the variety of
their talents and cultural backgrounds. Ms. Golden has also included her poem
too. — Fabu, Madison Poet Laureate, Consultant in African American Culture and

I Am Black and Proud
by Diamond
I am black and proud
People may talk but I know they not going to do nothing
I am black and proud
I like me for being me and only me
I am black and proud
Ribs
I am black and proud
Stanky leg, Single ladies, Bird walk, Turning me out, Diva
I am black and proud
Partying, dancing, drawing and writing, talking is better
I am black and proud
If people don’t like me I say “I wasn’t born on this world
for you to Like me so get over it”
Black is my favorite color
And I am always going to be proud for being me
Selfish, helpful, and sweet that’s me
Having fun is my game
Enjoying my life as the life I live
With the ha-has and the he-he smiles and frowns
I am black and proud
Kind, respectful, responsible, that’s me
Snatching, touching, nosey, loud especially me
You’d never find know body like me, I am unique
I am me and only me
I am black and proud
Hugging, kissing you’d never find know body as real as me
Say it loud I am black and I am proud
If You Don’t Like my Name, Deal with It
by Vaughn Crosby
My name is Vaughn Dominic Crosby
It’s been my name for the last ten years
And it will be for 90 more. (God willing)
If you don’t like my name, deal with it
I’ve had my name since I was born
And if I was to change any part it would
Be my last name
The reason is my own personal business
And I won’t tell you
If you don’t like my name deal with it
Some people don’t like my name
Because it is unique
I think that since it is uncommon
It is special
If you don’t like my name deal with it
Ecuador
by Ivanna Nicole Sánchez Vinueza
Ecuador es tan bonito
Yo vine de Ecuador cuando tenía 1 año y 8 meses.
Yo estraño Ecuador
Porque estraño la comida y mi familia
Extraño la cascada y también
El ruido que así la
Cascada. Y también
Escuchaba la
Música. Yo nací
En Shell, Ecuador.
Toda mi familia nacimos
En Ecuador. Mi bandera
Es Amarilla, azul
Y rojo. Yo no
Esperaba este poema que
Sea largo. Como
Dije solo tenia
1 año y 8 meses
Grandma and Me
by Yumna
A grayish white hair woman asks me…
Yumna don’t you want to go to the mall?
Yes I do
Then hurry up
OK, OK
Yumna what do you want to buy? I don’t know
Ok then
I’m hungry
What do you want to eat?
How about ice cream?
OK
Thank you
Granny, granny
I know what I want to buy
Ok. Like what?
A lot of skirts. I KNOW that
Ok that’s done
Well now the mall is closing, so let’s go home
When I get home I show my mom all the clothes I got
Me & Mom both know my grandma is the nicest person ever
Ozi’s Chocolate Colored Cello
by Ozi
My chocolate colored cello
Sounds like a sad moment.
It gives me strength to play.
My chocolate colored cello
Feels hard times
Like when its bridges broke
My chocolate covered cello
Knows its own type of tempo
And has a magnificent sound
My chocolate covered cello
Is why I feel great
When I am playing this marvelous instrument
Fishing with my Dad
by Peter
Splash
Taking the boat to the whitish
clear water. My dad driving the boat
60 miles per hour. Taking the boat
to the perfect spot. Casting out the line
minnows.
Pulling up white bass,
bass, sun fish, sturgeon
buffalos, carp, cat fish, walleye,
and rock bass.
Pulling up a 27 inch
and 30 fish. I was like woo
then they were like woo
because I almost fell
in the clear water.
When I pulled up a walleye
with its razor sharp teeth, I tried
to hold it by the gills
so it wouldn’t bit me but it did.
KFC is the Chicken Micken
by Tyreese
the chicken in my mouth

just the way I like KFC is tasty, tasty, tasty
if you think it is nasty
if you think KFC is nasty
well that is better for me to chomp, chomp, chomp
chicken micken
guess what
what
chicken butt.

Torshia Fishes
by Torshia Lee
Running to the fishing spot
Walking around the lake
Casting out the line
Casting and reeling all day
Feeling the smooth bamboo
On my hands
Casting and reeling
I feel something pull
But it’s just a rock
I pull and pull
Then it snaps!
Tying a new lure on
Casting and reeling
I feel a small tug
Then BOOM!
A walleye bites
My lure
I feel the tension
In the air
Reeling and Reeling!
I reel in the walleye
I hold the walleyes gills
I touch his razor sharp teeth
I feel proud of what I caught
I walk around the lake
And keep fishing.
Soccer Ruben
by Ruben
Ball rolling like lightning
On the dark green soccer field
Sun shining like a bright fire
On the ball
Smelly poop on the field
People yelling
Hurry hurry
We can win
Bom Chaka laca bom
I kick the ball
Like I’ve never kicked it before
It goes straight to the goal
Spinning like a fast clock
Bom Chaka laca bom
It’s a goal
We keep playing with focus
The other team player pushes to get
o the goal
I push back hard
They pass the ball to a partner
I run like a cheetah
To stop the goal
The whistle blows wheeeeeeeeee
The other team is furious
Because they almost made a goal
But they did not
Bom Chaka laca bom.

Feel the speed of cool air.
When I have the ball,

But not hard.
The ball feels tough.
But when I score
It feels great!
When I kick it feels
Awesome!
Curving or scoring
Juke, juke and juke!
I do spectacular soccer!
I run pass juke
Till I hear,

Small But Still So Strong
by Olivia
Britney Spaniels,
Soft light bark,
Sounds so beautiful.
Also cuddly can you tell?
Round and Round they chase
Their tails.
Small but still so strong.
They crawl into my
Lap like furry little
Angels.
I love the puppies
Because they are …
SMALL BUT STILL SO STRONG!
Never give up
by Jorge
My mom was watching me play soccer. I was playing on a regular field
with green grass and medium blue sky over ahead. The wizards were
wining 9 to 1. The Cobras gave up a little. My mom told me never give
up. Five minutes left to play and they won, but I didn’t care who won. I only
cared that I never gave up. I will never give up in my life again, no matter
what happens cause I’m Jorge Montoya. So when I play soccer again, I
will never never give up again. I am who I am and I am proud of that. YAY!
