Finer Womanhood, scholarship, and service
January 16 – March 31 of each year is Finer Womanhood Observance for
the women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. In honor of the occasion, the Nu Iota
Zeta Chapter presented Mt. Zion Baptist church with a donation for the James
C. Wright Scholarship fund to assist youth in pursuing their educational
endeavors.
Zeta was founded on the precepts of scholarship, community and cultural
endeavors, service and sisterly love. “We believe in education,” says Donna
Brown, “as it is a means to achieving greater things in life and contributing to
the community. After all, when we were younger, someone cared enough and
found us to be important enough to invest in us. So, we in turn, wanted to
invest in the young people and give back to our community. That is what we
are about.”
Recently, the chapter partnered with the St. Mary’s Hospital and the March
Dimes to open a Stork’s Nest to assist young women ages 25 and younger who
are pregnant and planning to deliver at St. Mary’s Hospital by encouraging
them to see their health care providers regularly and attending educational
classes. Women enrolled the program are awarded “baby bucks” which they
may use to redeem baby items at the nest.
Zeta Phi Beta is a community conscious action oriented organization
which was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington DC in
1920. To learn more about the sorority, you may go to
