The Moon Festival, also known as Mid-Autumn
Festival (Zhongqiu Jie), is one of the most important
festivals in the Chinese culture. It is usually held on
the 15th of the eighth month in the Chinese
Calendar, which falls in the middle of September.
Like Christmas and Thanksgiving, the Moon
Festival is a tradition which requires families to get
together and celebrate. Various types of moon
cakes are made for this special occasion and
gatherings highlight musical performances and
games.
The local version of this auspicious event was
hosted by the MadisonArea Chinese Community
Organization (MACCO) on September 12 last year at
Eagle Heights Community Center, drawing
hundreds of community members who came with
their home-cooked dishes to share, and proceeds
from ticket sales went to MACCO’s programs. The
MadisonChinese Taichi Club performed new
routines such as the “Taichi Ball” and “Sand Jar
Exercise,” while the Asian Pacific Dance STudy
Group and Hua Mulan Dance Troup performed
celebratory numbers.
